Clinical efficacy of 1% Metformin gel and systemic Doxycyline in Chronic Periodontitis

Abstract

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate and compare the clinical efficacy of 1% Metformin gel and oral Doxycycline in adjunct to scaling and root planning (SRP) on clinical and biochemical parameters in patients having moderate localized chronic periodontitis.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In this randomized open label clinical trial, 60 systemically healthy, males and females aged 30-50 year, diagnosed with localized moderate chronic periodontitis were enrolled from Bahria Dental College Hospital after written informed consent. Patients were randomized into two groups of 30 each. Group A had SRP and oral Doxycycline (200 mg stat, 100 mg OD for 14 days) and Group B received Metformin 1% gel intra-pocket with SRP at day 0. Clinical parameters (PPD, PI, CAL, mSBI) were evaluated at day 0, 45 and 90. Biochemical marker (TNF?) was evaluated by Eliza at day 0 and 90. All patients were advised to avoid vigorous brushing, flossing, and intake of chewy sticky diet.

RESULTS

Group B showed significant reduction in PPD and CAL compared to group A while PI and  mSBI were found to be non-significant. TNF? was significantly reduced in group B at day 90.

CONCLUSION

1% Metformin gel has produced more beneficial effects in adjunct to SRP on clinical and biochemical parameters in comparison to oral doxycycline.
